CoupleChord Privacy Policy

Privacy Summary: We collect the relationship data you choose to share, use it to run the app and generate coaching suggestions, and share it only with your connected partner and the service providers listed below. We never sell your personal information.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

• Name, email address, and authentication credentials (managed by Firebase Authentication — we never see your password)
• Profile photos you choose to upload
• Anniversary dates and relationship milestones

1.2 Early-Access Waitlist

• If you enter your email address on our website before the app is publicly available, we store that address so we can email you once when early access opens. We do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not share it. Ask us at couplechord@gmail.com and we will delete it.

1.3 Relationship Data

• Daily check-ins, energy levels, and mood tracking
• Partner connection status
• Shared goals, tasks, rituals, and streaks

1.4 Communication Data

• Messages, love notes, and journal entries shared between you and your partner
• Voice notes you record in chat — the audio recording itself, its duration, and a waveform used to draw it. Voice notes are stored so you and your partner can play them back, and they are deleted when you delete your account. We never transcribe them.
• AI coaching conversations and interaction history

1.5 Technical Data

• Device information and push-notification tokens
• App usage analytics (via Google Firebase Analytics), tied to your account ID
• Crash reports and error logs (via Firebase Crashlytics), tied to your account ID
• Problem reports. When you tap "Report a problem", we receive your note, your app version and device model, your account ID and email address so we can reply, and a short log of recent app activity — which screens opened, which API calls ran, and which of them failed. The app also sends this automatically when it detects a failure it can recover from, so that a broken screen reaches us even when nobody reports it. These logs are stripped before they are recorded: request and response contents, access tokens, and the identifiers of individual messages, journal entries and photos are removed, so the log shows *that* something failed rather than *what you wrote*.

We do not collect your location, contacts, or financial information, and the microphone is used only while you are actively recording a voice note — never in the background, and never when you simply open a chat.

2. How We Use Your Information

• Synchronize check-ins, energy levels, and shared content with your partner
• Generate AI coaching suggestions based on what you share
• Send push notifications you and your partner trigger (messages, "thinking of you" pings, reminders)
• Analyze aggregate usage to improve the app
• Detect crashes and fix bugs
• Ensure security and prevent fraud or abuse

3. Information Sharing and Disclosure

3.1 Partner Sharing

When you connect with a partner, your check-ins, energy levels, messages, notes, and shared content are visible to them. Disconnecting stops all future sharing.

3.2 Service Providers

We share data with service providers only as needed to operate CoupleChord:

• Google Firebase / Google Cloud — authentication, database (Firestore), analytics, crash reporting, and push notifications
• Railway — hosts our API server
• OpenAI and Anthropic — when you use AI coaching features, relevant message content and mood/energy context is sent to their APIs to generate the response. We use their business API tiers; this content is not used to train their models per their API terms.

We never sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers. The app contains no ads.

3.3 Legal Requirements

We may disclose information when required by law, court order, or to protect rights and safety. We will notify you of such requests unless legally prohibited.

4. Data Security

• All data is encrypted in transit using TLS
• Data is encrypted at rest by Google Cloud (Firestore)
• API access requires authentication, and your data is only accessible to you and your connected partner
• Note: messages are not end-to-end encrypted — our systems process message content to provide features like AI coaching

If we ever discover a data breach affecting your personal data, we will notify affected users promptly and describe what happened and what we are doing about it.

5. Your Privacy Rights and Controls

• Access & export: download your data in a portable JSON format from the app
• Correction: edit your profile and content at any time
• Deletion: delete your account and all associated data at any time in the app (Profile → Delete Account), or without the app via our account deletion page or by emailing couplechord@gmail.com
• Partner separation: disconnecting from a partner stops all future sharing

6. Data Retention

• Your data is retained while your account is active
• When you delete your account, your personal data is purged from our production systems
• Crash and analytics data is retained per Firebase's standard retention windows
• Problem reports are deleted 90 days after they are filed
• Aggregated, anonymized statistics may be retained for product research

7. Children's Privacy

CoupleChord is designed for adults aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If we become aware that we have collected such information, we will delete it immediately.

8. International Data Transfers

Your information is processed and stored on Google Cloud and Railway infrastructure, which may be located in a different country than you (primarily the United States). By using the Service you consent to this transfer.

9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:

• Right to know what personal information is collected and how it's used
• Right to delete personal information (with certain exceptions)
• Right to opt-out of the sale of personal information (we don't sell your data)
• Right to non-discrimination for exercising privacy rights

10. European Union Rights (GDPR)

EU residents have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation:

• Right to rectification of inaccurate personal data
• Right to data portability in a machine-readable format
• Right to object to processing for legitimate interests
• Right to lodge a complaint with supervisory authorities

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Material changes will be communicated through the app, and the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy will change.
